English II Homework
The best advice I can give you is to study 10-20 minutes a day over the study guide and notes you have taken about grammar, literary terms, and vocabulary.
Otherwise, rest and come back ready to learn!

Make sure that you are reading over your mid-term study guide. If you finished your CASE assessment early, you have already finished "The Lottery." However, for those of you who did not have an opportunity to read "The Lottery," please finish reading it in your informational binder. Below is the audio version we used in class. We will discuss "The Lottery" during class tomorrow. Your student will receive a neon orange or lime green sheet that has their midterm study guide. I do not believe in giving the same questions from previous tests, because that does not assess retention of skills, only the ability to memorize and regurgitate information. Below is a copy of what I supplied your student today.
Midterm Study Guide for 10th grade
TNReady is quickly approaching. In two months, your student will begin the testing process. Here is the breakdown of the test's construction according to the TDOE.
Why do they write so much in this class? Writing 25-29% of their test score Why are you teaching so much grammar? It's not like they'll use it. Conventions 7-9% of their test score Do they really have to read that many stories? Literature 25-30% of their test score Do those articles have to be that difficult? Informational text 25-30% of their test score Is all that vocabulary necessary? Unfortunately, yes. Big change this year! Vocabulary 8-12% of their test. Everything I do in this class is geared toward their success on the TNReady and in writing for their future. Please make sure that you are reading outside of class, even if it is re-reading what we read in class. I cannot stress enough that reading frequently and often builds reading fluency. Asking your child questions about the reading helps build reading comprehension. If your child is still having difficulty, as I have stated time and again to them in class, I will stay after school as long as I have a 24 hour notice so that I may make arrangements for my children. The first nine weeks is drawing to a close. Any work from A Separate Peace or the short story that includes tests, quizzes, and homework must be made up by this FRIDAY September 28.
Finish reading "The Cold Equations" tonight for homework. Remember that this starts on page 114 in your informational binder. This will need to be done so that you can complete the quiz tomorrow.

On your compound-complex sentences worksheet, I want you to do as we did in class by completing #9-12. Highlight the subordinate clause (or if you do not have a highlighter, place parenthesis around the subordinate clause). Underline the subject, and place two lines under the verb. Circle the comma/conjunction or the semi-colon that joins the sentence together.

Please re-read the John Wilkes Booth article and make corrections to the multiple choice questions and finish the short answer questions. These questions are just like TNReady. If you miss part A, you automatically miss part B. If you have part of part A correct, you receive partial credit for Part A and Part B.
Your vocabulary for this week is the following: •Dauntless--fearless •Sedate---calm •Sagacious—wise; having good judgment •Pervade--widespread •Paramount—supreme or dominant •Immutable –unchanging Since you have no reading over the weekend, I expect you to finish your projects and have them ready to submit on September 18.
