Honors English II Homework
Works Cited was due today by 3:15. Since you had one and a half class periods to complete this assignment, I do not anticipate having late submissions. I will look over these during spring break so that when we return on April 1st, you will be able to complete your assignment and presentation. I do not sacrifice class time haphazardly. It would behoove you to make certain all work is done in a timely manner.

Reminder---Revised homework essays are due TOMORROW!
Tomorrow, we will begin working on your research presentations by finding sources and citing them using MLA citation. These topics must have my approval BEFORE you begin researching. On Friday, you will have a pronoun-antecedent agreement test and a vocab quiz. I normally do not give a quiz and a test on the same day, but since both are brief, there should be no problem. The only thing you need to worry about it making revisions to your argumentative essay about homework. In case you cannot find your documents, here are the links to those articles. This revision is due on March 21 by 3:15. If you finish beforehand, please print off a copy and turn it into the basket. Otherwise, at 3:15 on Thursday, I will print off anyone's essay and use the TNReady rubric for argumentative essays to grade your essay.
Youki Terada's article https://www.edutopia.org/blog/research-trends-is-homework-effective-youki-terada Clifton B. Parker's article https://news.stanford.edu/2014/03/10/too-much-homework-031014/ No homework over the weekend! Enjoy it! On Monday, we will hit the ground running!
No homework tonight. We are having a test tomorrow over rhetorical devices. It should be brief. After you are finished, you will finish your group work.
For homework tonight, read pages 56-57 ("Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation" by FDR) and the reading selection from Julius Caesar. Mark Antony's speech to the Romans.
Do as we have done in class. Annotate what rhetorical devices you see and how those devices are necessary to the speaker's audience and the occasion (why the person is speaking). How are the speeches similar? How are the rhetorical devices used differently? Please make sure you read pages 10-12 in your info binder--"I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King, Jr.
I have had to make some adjustments to the calendar. Let the madness continue! Your homework is to finish the chart comparing and contrasting FDR's speech to Eleanor Roosevelt's letter. This is due Friday (if you are here) or Monday (if you are absent on Friday).
The reading for Friday will still cover MLK's "I have a dream" speech on pages 10-12 in your info binder. Tear it down by looking at the following concepts: allusion (why does he use it? How does where he uses it shape the meaning of the paragraph?), parallelism and repetition (where is it used? what main ideas does it reveal? how does the use of P&R impact the purpose and audience?), audience (when does he change it? why does he change it?), imagery (what are the main images? Does he change imagery with each audience?), and metaphor (when does he use it? With which audience does he use it? How does it impact his message to his audience?). The midterm exam has been moved to Thursday March 7 for this class. If you are not here because of band, you will be expected to make it up next Wednesday (per administration).
We will continue to read other speeches in preparation for your research, speech, and presentation. Tomorrow we will read FDR's speech on basic rights and compare/contrast it to his wife Eleanor Roosevelt's letter that we read on March 4. On Friday, we will read Martin Luther King's speech in your info binder and examine how he addresses multiple audiences. Revisions for the practice argumentative essay are due on March 15. You will receive a notification once I have finished leaving comments for your paper. Please read "The Four Basic Rights" by Eleanor Roosevelt on page 7 in your info binder. Be ready to discuss parallelism and repetition, structure, and other rhetorical devices she uses in her letter.
