You are to read pages 56-57 in your informational binder. This is FDR's speech "Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation."
You will need to examine the speech for everything that we have covered so far. Highlight and label the following items you find: Parallelism and repetition, tone, audience, logos, pathos, ethos, and figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, allusion). In your NEW groups on Monday, you will discuss what you found, and as a group, you will determine FDR's purpose and how the structure of his speech supports his purpose. If I walk around and see that you do not have anything prepared, then you will be taken out of the classroom and complete the work by yourself. You cannot expect to learn anything if you do not try yourself. Study for your vocab quiz tomorrow.
Make sure that you read the rest of page 11. Who is King's intended audience? What is his purpose for this section of his speech? How does he utilize parallelism and repetition here? What is his tone toward his audience (circle words that are positive or negative to help you figure out his overall tone)? |
